indications use

as of january 2017, plecanatide approved in united states treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation in adults. presence of condition determined using rome iii diagnostic criteria chronic constipation requires patient meet stool frequency, stool consistency, incomplete evacuation, , straining requirements in addition not being candidate irritable bowel syndrome. symptoms should have been present @ least 3 of last 6 months establish chronic nature of condition before treatment plecanatide indicated.


contraindications

plecanatide has not been shown safe or effective in persons 6 years 18 years of age. use of plecanatide persons under age of 6 poses serious dehydration risk , studies have demonstrated plecanatide can cause death in juvenile mice due dehydrating effect.


use of plecanatide contraindicated in persons suspected of having mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction.


efficacy

plecanatide has been shown safe , effective. has shown @ least equally effective main competitor, linaclotide (brand name: linzess), has been shown have lower rate of diarrhea adverse drug reaction.
