khun chang khun phaen old folk story in thai language. originated folk entertainment time around 1600 a.d., developed storytellers recited episodes local audiences, , passed on story word-of-mouth. eighteenth century, such performances had become popular form of entertainment in siam. storytellers recounted story in stylized recitation, using 2 small sticks of wood (krap) give rhythm , emphasis. performances typically lasted full night.


the performance of khun chang khun phaen created new genre known sepha. @ least century, episodes work known term. in fourth reign (1851–1868), parts of royal chronicles , few other works rendered in form on royal commission, few fragments have since disappeared.


the origin of word sepha disputed. there musical form of same name, seems unconnected. kukrit pramoj thought sepha meant jail , genre developed convicts in jail. sujit wongthet argued connection sanskrit word sewa, indicating original association ritual.
