in later phase, metrolinx had planned eglinton crosstown extended westward mount dennis along eglinton avenue west toronto pearson international airport. however, during 2014 toronto mayoral election, john tory proposed smarttrack, have included heavy rail transit line established along section of eglinton avenue. in 2016, city of toronto released feasibility report found proposal have significant capital costs ranging $3.6 billion $7.7 billion. in comparison, extending eglinton crosstown approved cost $1.3 billion. found light rail transit line had higher ridership heavy rail line.


the city of toronto s chief planner recommended extension of eglinton crosstown line (referred crosstown west) pearson airport in lieu of establishing smarttrack on eglinton avenue, based upon negative community impacts, higher costs, , lower projected ridership associated heavy rail corridor. on january 19, 2016, tory agreed analysis , supported metrolinx s original plan of extending crosstown. tory has included crosstown west light-rail component of smarttrack plan.


the estimated completion 2023 of july 2016. estimated cost build eglinton west lrt $2.47 billion of city of toronto contributes $1.18 billion, federal government contributes $822.9 million, , city of mississauga , greater toronto airports authority asked contribute $470 million portion of line in mississauga. approvals financing still secured of november 2, 2016.


public meetings extension, renamed eglinton west lrt, began november 13, 2017.


the 2010 environmental assessment transit city planned entirely at-grade light rail line running west weston road , mount dennis station. however, october 2017, city considering grade separation using fly-overs , fly-unders @ 6 intersections: martin grove road, kipling avenue, islington avenue, royal york road, scarlett road, , jane street surface running between stations.


on november 21, 2017, city staff recommended 10 stops along eglinton west between mount dennis station , future renforth station. recent recommendation drops stops @ rangoon, east mall, , russell / eden valley.


at city executive committee meeting on november 28, 2017, city staff recommended building extension without grade separation. city staff had concluded at-grade extension provide better access transit users , have fewer environmental impacts. grade separation have little improvement on traffic because at-grade option use signal coordination; however, grade separation require fewer restrictions on left turns. there no difference in development potential either option. however, because of feedback public , local politicians, mayor john tory recommended more study on grade separation.


a at-grade extension estimated cost $1.5 $2.1 billion. grade separation add $881.9 million $1.32 billion cost.


eglinton east lrt































































































































































to complement planned extension of line 2 bloor–danforth scarborough town centre, city of toronto drafted plan extend line 5 eglinton further east scarborough terminate @ university of toronto scarborough campus.


the 12-kilometre (7.5 mi) extension connect eglinton go station , guildwood go station , pass through “neighbourhood improvement areas” (often low-income areas) such eglinton east, scarborough junction, morningside, scarborough village , west hill. extension add 18 new stops east of kennedy station , serve estimated 43,400 additional riders per day (a ridership similar of line 4 sheppard subway).


the extension follows alignment of scarborough malvern lrt, proposed part of transit city. in 2010, scarborough malvern lrt cancelled then-mayor rob ford, despite being approved toronto city council , government of ontario in 2009.


in 2016, plan scarborough malvern lrt revived , rebranded crosstown east before being renamed again eglinton east in 2017. of november 2017, project unfunded cost estimated @ $1.6 billion $1.7 billion, estimated completion date of 2023.


at november 2017 public meeting, city staff presented possibility of extending eglinton east lrt 6 stops malvern town centre. malvern extension 4.2 4.7 kilometres long.
