macedonian assigned west indies squadron cruise in west indies , along west coast of africa 1839 1847 continuing deterrent caribbean pirates.

by joint resolution of congress on 3 march 1847 macedonian , sloop-of-war jamestown placed in civilian hands carry food ireland during great famine of late 1840s. volunteer crew, macedonian, captain george c. de kay in command, departed new york on 15 june 12,000 barrels of provisions ireland donated private citizens of united states, returning brooklyn navy yard months later resume navy service.

expedition japan

in 1852 macedonian docked @ brooklyn navy yard razeed , converted sloop-of-war commodore matthew perry s expedition japan. assigned part of east india squadron under command of captain joel abbot, 1 of ten american ships entering edo bay, japan, on 13 february 1854 during perry s second visit negotiate opening of japan foreign trade, remaining part of show of force under convention of kanagawa signed @ yokohama on 31 march 1854.

macedonian remained on patrol in north pacific next 3 years. then, 1857 1861 served home squadron in mediterranean , caribbean.

civil war

with american civil war looming ahead, frigate departed portsmouth, new hampshire, pensacola, florida, on 12 january 1861 join brooklyn in preventing possible confederate attack on harbor. on 11 february macedonian sailed veracruz, mexico, arriving on 24th. began patrol operations along gulf coast , coast of south america, stops @ aspinwall (later colón, panama) , portobelo, panama; martinique; , st. thomas, u.s. virgin islands. on 3 december got underway dacotah st. thomas east coast, arriving boston navy yard on 16 january 1862. macedonian spent of next 2 years west indies squadron. in july 1863 cruised along coast of portugal sloop-of-war kearsarge hunting confederate states ship southerner. around alfred thayer mahan served aboard brief time.

from end of year through 1870, macedonian served school , practice ship midshipmen @ united states naval academy, first @ newport, rhode island, after civil war @ annapolis, maryland. in 1871 laid in ordinary @ norfolk navy yard, sold wiggin , robinson merchant service.

post-navy

there no record of macedonian having sailed merchant ship, , next reference ship, in 1900, mentions having been converted macedonia hotel @ city island, bronx. hotel sold in 1912 , renamed city island casino, burned down on 9 june 1922. naval origin of macedonian hotel mentioned in ripley s believe or not item in 1983.
