towards end of 16th century clan erskine chiefs set out claim earldom of mar opposed increasing power of farquharsons. braemar castle built john erskine, 18th earl of mar fell hands of clan farquharson. clan became known fighting farquharsons due fierce reputation , became strong supporters of stuarts.


17th century, clan conflicts , civil war

during scottish civil war donald farquharson of monaltrie fought james graham, 1st marquess of montrose in 1644, , charles ii @ battle of worcester in 1651. john farquharson of inverey known black colonel , burned braemar castle. john supported james vii of scotland , followed john graham, 1st viscount dundee in 1689. after dundee s death in 1689 clan farquharson supported successor, thomas buchan of clan buchan.


in late 17th century earl of airlie came dispute clan macthomas on lands of canlochcan. airlie s legal action successful chief of clan macthomas refused recognize , continued pasture cattle on disputed land. in response airlie used legal right lease land men of clan farquharson led feud. on 28 january 1673 farquharson of broughdearg killed along 2 sons of chief of clan macthomas. lawsuits followed crippled macthomas chief.


18th century , jacobite risings

during jacobite rising of 1715 john farquharson of invercauld colonel in chattan confederation regiment supported james francis edward stuart. john taken prisoner @ battle of preston (1715). held @ marshalsea prison , condemned executed @ tower of london, , 2 other highland officers reprieved on morning of execution. paroled , not allowed return scotland on twenty years.


in 1745 strength of clan farquharson estimated 500 duncan forbes, lord culloden. on 23 december 1745, 300 men of clan farquharson had fought jacobites in victory @ battle of inverurie (1745). during jacobite rising of 1745, cousin of john farquharson lady anne farquharson-mackintosh wife of angus mackintosh, chief of clan mackintosh. angus mackintosh in fact serving officer in black watch regiment of british army , captured @ battle of prestonpans jacobite forces. mackintosh sent home moy having been given parole not take arms against jacobites , when arrived greeted wife, anne farquharson, said servant, captain replied servant, colonel . ever after known colonel anne. anne later saved charles edward stuart capture in known rout of moy. anne imprisoned 6 weeks after battle of culloden. francis farquharson of monaltrie led farquharsons @ battle of culloden , although survived imprisoned , condemned death, lucky enough have execution reduced exile.
