the origins of fabian tropical wave , cold front entered northwestern caribbean sea on october 12. 2 systems interacted in gulf of honduras, producing convection , low atmospheric pressures. anticyclone developed on system, aided in organization of thunderstorms. @ 1300 utc on october 15, hurricane hunters flight observed sustained winds of 40 mph (65 km/h) southwest of isle of youth. based on report, system classified tropical storm fabian. development typical october storm in western caribbean. high pressure area north, there large pressure gradient had produced tropical storm force winds on area. time fabian developed circulation, able classified tropical storm. however, possible tropical depression 12 hours before hurricane hunters report.


upon becoming tropical storm, fabian disorganized , had restricted outflow. eastward moving upper-level trough imparted northeast motion unfavorable wind shear. despite atmospheric conditions, fabian intensified peak winds of 45 mph (75 km/h), although strongest winds located east of center. late on october 15, storm moved on isle of youth before crossing on western cuba. on october 16, center becoming difficult locate on satellite imagery. storm moved through florida straits, passing southeast of florida mainland , bahamas. there initial uncertainty whether fabian absorbed approaching trough or maintain separate identity. late on october 16, fabian transitioned extratropical cyclone absorbed trough.
