career

his career partly spent in french colonies (algeria, tunisia, tonkin, china). appointed sub-lieutenant of infantry in october 1884. 4 years later promoted lieutenant. in november 1893 became captain , transferred 147th infantry regiment. in 1903 appointed professor of military history @ st. cyr, , later became lecturer on infantry tactics @ École de guerre. promoted lieutenant-colonel in 1907 , colonel in 1910. in january 1913, appointed director of infantry, , obtained rank of brigadier general in october of year.

at start of world war i, chief of minister of war adolphe messimy s military cabinet. when latter left office, guillaumat appointed head of 33rd infantry division on august 30, 1914, , of 4th infantry division on december 9, 1914. led 1st army corps february 25, 1915, , on december 15, 1916, replaced robert nivelle commander of second army, when latter made commander-in-chief of french army.


guillaumat sent replace general sarrail commander of allied army of orient in salonika in december, 1917. laid plans later executed replacement, general franchet d’esperey, , rebuilt relations france s allies damaged predecessor. guillaumat recalled paris on 17 june 1918 , replaced franchet d’esperey.


there, replaced auguste dubail military governor of paris. after success of second battle of marne, appointed supreme war council. returned active command commander of fifth army, led through ardennes @ end of war.


occupation of rhine

following armistice, guillaumat appointed commander in chief of allied occupation forces in rhineland. criticised failure take suitable precaution against cold weather in winter of 1928/9 led of soldiers under command freezing death.
