background

the second daughter of parents, khadíjih bagum born name of khadíjih-sultán shírází in 1822 in shiraz. appellation given bagum ( bagum signifies lady ) seen sign of respect, , should not mistaken part of name. father Áqá mír `alí merchant importing goods bushehr. worked in family’s mercantile business , least successful member of family. mother, Ḥájíyyih bíbí of jahrum, had been widowed when married khadíjih’s father. mother’s first marriage khadíjih had 1 half brother named muhammad-mihdí, noted poet, , half sister known `ammih Ḥájí, when grown married hájí mírzá siyyid `alí, guardian of báb in childhood. had 3 full siblings: 2 brothers, Ḥájí mírzá abu l-qasim, followed family occupancy of commerce, Ḥájí mírzá siyyid hasan, became teacher of medicine , studied theology, , 1 sister named zahrá.

in childhood acquainted báb, being second cousin once removed, , 2 playmates. 2 grew older however, following custom, did not see each other. in young manhood báb wont go on pilgrimage karbila long periods of time. distressed mother, causing search keep 23-year-old báb in shiraz – wife. resulted in marriage of khadíjih bagum , báb, arranged swiftly, perhaps dissuade him leaving shiraz. 20-year-old khadíjih bagum married báb on august 25, 1842 in shiraz, ceremony being conducted imam of city, shaykh abú-turáb. young couple moved modest compound báb s mother, fátimih bagum.

marriage life , developments

in 1843 gave birth couple’s child, boy named ahmad, died few months later. ahmad buried in vicinity of bíbí-dukhtarán in shiraz, body later removed. birth difficult one, life of khadíjih @ stake, , never conceived again. death of child hard bear, , báb consoled her, assuring son in heaven. later recalled how earliest days of marriage of happiest times of life. following sojourn of husband isfahan safety lived lonely life mother of báb , closest companion, african servant named fiddih. anguished @ separation husband, consoled herself letters sent her, revealing loving relationship 2 had. news concerning báb reached , fátimih bagum sporadically. family members resentful , embarrassed connection báb, , distanced khadíjih, sister zahrá dressing herself peasant come tell sister news of báb.

at age of 28 khadíjih widowed when báb killed firing squad. moved house of sister zahrá. fearing health, men of household thought prudent keep báb’s death secret , mother year. however, death of uncle of báb, 18-year-old son, secret not kept. women distraught , 3 men mourned together. mother of báb horrified, , decided retire karbila. departure meant khadíjih dependent on fiddih , sister. departure shiraz added burden of sorrow , deepened sadness of heart. had no longer side comforter love , sympathy , care had sustained me on years, remarked.

later life

according own later account, had recognized báb s religious station before báb had declared mission mulla husayn. later recognized bahá u lláh s claim, , became bahá í. kept in correspondence bahá u lláh while had returned shiraz , lived in previous home. revered bahá’ís; many visited whilst journeying see bahá’u’lláh. 1 occasion young fátimih nahrí of isfahán, accompanied brother, visited. “they stayed fifteen days, , of happiest days of life” later reflected.

later make journey akká visit bahá u lláh in 1882 nephew come yazd. however, when nephew went straight ottoman syria, not able go, women not travel alone. after hearing news, health rapidly decreased. died on september 15, 1882 @ age of sixty, , buried in shiraz. same night devoted maid , closest friend, african named fiddih, died too. in kitáb-i-badí , bahá u lláh gives title of khayru n nisa (the virtuous of women) , forbids women, save fátimih bagum, báb s mother, adopting title.
