the castle ca. 1833


reszel settlement built bartian tribe of old prussians , conquered teutonic knights in 1241. native prussians later recaptured settlement , held 5 years, defeated german crusaders. reszel received town privileges in 1337 under magdeburg law. in 1466 reszel became part of kingdom of poland.


in 1772 reszel became part of prussian partition of poland. in 1811 barbara zdunk sentenced prussian court death witchcraft , setting castle alight in 1807. trial lasted 3 years. case controversial, court , king frederick william iii of prussia approved verdict in königsberg , sentenced burn, mysteriously strangled before process. trial described last burning of witches in europe.


as result of treaty of versailles on 11 july 1920 warmia , masuria plebiscite organized under control of league of nations, resulted 97,90% of votes remain in germany , 2,10% poland.


following potsdam conference of 1945, after second world war, town transferred germany poland administration, of half of east prussia. other half of east prussia under russian administration (kaliningrad, formerly known koenigsberg).
