during electoral campaign post of cyprus president in 2013, announced commitment reduce military conscription in cyprus 14 months during first hundred days of term. during months of anastasiades administration there important planning reduction of military conscription 14 months in order increase incentive 18 year olds serve conscription , reduce financial burden cypriot state. minister of defence fotis fotiou announced there final decision on reduction of military conscription towards late 2013. there increasing pressure ending military conscription due 2012–13 cypriot financial crisis.


in august 2013, minister of defence fotis fotiou announced reduction of military service, in electoral manifesto of anastasiades. supported national service reduced 18 months in first phase , decrease further 14 months before end of 2014. on 25 february 2016, decided cabinet reduce military service 18 months conscripts joined in summer of 2015, , reduce service 14 months joined thereafter.
