Hurricane Two 1861 Atlantic hurricane season








a month after dissipation of first hurricane, tropical storm formed north of hispaniola on august 13. ludlum (1963) described key west hurricane between august 14 , 16, , determined system had, in fact, surpassed threshold hurricane status based on wind observations 2 ships. storm skirted north coast of cuba moved west-northwest , passed through florida straits. on or around august 15, havana, cuba experienced heavy rainfall. although cyclone did not directly make landfall, delivered hurricane-force winds southern florida. turned more toward northwest entered gulf of mexico, began gradually weaken. listed having dissipated on august 17 in northern gulf.


the hurricane damaged or wrecked numerous vessels. 6 ships wrecked or grounded in bahamas, , crews of @ least two, john stanley , linea, had rescued. steamship santiago de cuba left port on august 4, , began encounter squally conditions later afternoon. heavy seas , strong gale inflicted damage on vessel. several ships along eastern coast of cuba wrecked during storm, leading great uncertainty , concern regarding fate of santiago. @ least 3 vessels lost or grounded along florida keys.
