1981–1982

martin had tumultuous beginning in nascar, driving 6 different teams 1981 1987. made 5 starts in 1981 driving team owned bud reeder, earning 2 pole positions @ nashville , richmond , finishing third in final race @ martinsville.


martin competed full-time in 1982 team, competing rookie of year. team struggled consistency, posting 8 top tens compared 12 dnfs in 30 starts, including string of 5 dnfs in 6 races. completing 73.7 percent of laps , leading 4 laps season led martin finishing 14th in final standings , finishing second geoff bodine rookie of year. despite finishing strongly, 2 top tens in final 2 races, including fifth-place finish @ riverside, martin , reeder parted ways after season. remains driver run more 6 races team owned or co-owned reeder. @ end of season martin sold off team, having signed jim stacy race in 1983.


1983–1986

martin started 1983 running jim stacy. 2 parted ways after 7 races, posting 3 top 11s while having 4 races finishing 24th or worse. following 2 race-stint driving d. k. ulrich , 1 emanuel zervakis, landed ride morgan-mcclure motorsports 6 races, becoming organization s first driver. while mmm, martin posted 4 finished inside top 20, including 10th @ talladega.


unable secure ride 1984, martin went driving in american speed association. jimmy fennig came aboard crew chief in 1985 , 2 go on win asa championship next season, martin s fourth series championship.


his success in three-year stint in asa landed martin part-time ride driving jerry gunderman. in 5 starts, posted 2 top 15 finishes , started on outside pole @ atlanta.


1987

martin s success previous 3 seasons landed him full-time ride driving bruce lawmaster in busch series. season started strong posted 2 wins, 3 poles, 9 top tens, , fourth in standings after 15 races. after 1 dnf in first 15 races, martin had 7 dnfs in final 12 races, including 6 due mechanical failure , 4 blown engines. despite finishing in top ten in other 5 races, team s failure finish towards end dropped martin fourth 8 place in final standings.


though late season collapse ended martin s chance @ winning championship, success had in 1987 caught eye of jack roush, tapped martin drive him in sprint cup series 1988. finished 1987 3 wins, 6 poles, 13 top tens, , 8 place finish in standings.
