organization

the gaston county police department organized 4 divisions, each of headed assistant chief or director, responsible chief of police.


community policing division

the community policing division composed of uniformed officers , responsible controlling , preventing crime through regular patrols, answering calls service, apprehending suspected offenders, enforcing criminal , traffic laws, conducting preliminary investigations, , working community solve neighborhood crime problems. division overseen assistant chief. officers assigned 1 of 4 geographical areas (known zones), each of commanded captain. officers assigned each zone further divided squads (supervised sergeant) cover rotating 12-hour shifts. 4 patrol zones are:



zone 1 - northwestern part of gaston county, covering area of 100 square miles (260 km) population of on 20,000 residents.
zone 2 - northeastern part of county, covering 97 sq mi (250 km) more 30,000 residents.
zone 3 - southern unincorporated areas of gaston county, covering on 75 sq mi (190 km) 28,000 residents.
zone 4 - incorporated city limits of bessemer city, covering 4.4 sq mi (11 km) population of on 5,000 citizens.

the community policing division has 2 specialized patrol units: k-9 unit , marine enforcement unit. k-9 unit consists of 6 handler , dog teams responsible responding crimes in progress, performing street-level drug interdiction, , assisting divisions of department (as other agencies in county , surrounding counties) conducting specialized searches trained law enforcement dogs. searches include searches of houses , vehicles illegal drugs, searches of buildings suspects, , area searches evidence , tracks of subjects have run in attempt elude arrest.


the marine enforcement unit operates on seasonal basis june until october @ lake wylie , mountain island lake. responsible of enforcing boating laws, conducting boating safety inspections, removing navigational hazards, answering calls service, enforcing shoreline laws, , providing assistance boaters , other governmental agencies . unit consists of 4 full-time , 3 part-time officers, , uses 22-foot boat , 2 jet-skis patrol.


investigative , support services division

the investigative , support services division, overseen assistant chief, composed of several specialized units:



the criminal investigations unit (ciu) responsible investigation of homicides , other major felony offenses, select misdemeanors, missing persons, unattended deaths, offenses involving juveniles, , processing of evidence. includes crime scene search unit (cssu) , property , evidence unit (responsible storage , maintenance of items collected department during criminal investigations).
the special investigations unit (siu) responsible narcotics investigations, charged investigating gambling, illegal alcohol, , prostitution offenses.
the support services unit includes educational services (which provides student resource officers gaston county schools), employee development (responsible employee training), recruitment , selection (which handles aspects of hiring process), accreditation (which responsible maintaining necessary information maintain compliance accreditation standards), police information processing (primarily responsible maintaining department s records), , victim , witness coordinator (who provides assistance victims , witnesses of crimes , traumatic incidents).
the emergency response team (ert) group of highly trained officers available 24 hours day respond critical , high risk incidents. ert supports other law enforcement agencies in gaston , neighboring counties when requested. ert divided 3 subteams: negotiators, marksman–observers, , tactical entry.
the hazardous devices team (hdu) four-member team recognized fbi , national bomb squad advisory board accredited bomb squad.

communications division

the communications division multi-agency, multi-jurisdictional dispatch center providing 24-hour coverage of emergency 911 calls , radio transmissions gaston county. composed of 53 employees led director. unit charged maintaining , operating computer-aided dispatch system police, fire, , medical calls, receiving both emergency , non-emergency calls service.


animal control

the animal control division responsible enforcing animal-related north carolina laws , gaston county ordinances. meant protect county citizens dangerous animals , ensure proper care , treatment of animals. led administrator , composed of 22 employees including both sworn , non-sworn personnel.
