the park named after richard hartshorne, acquired land lenape thirteen shillings after sailing highland in 1670. rocky point, 224-acre (0.91 km) easternmost section of park, contains world war two-era coast artillery site known battery lewis on former highlands military reservation (also called navesink military reservation). later, highlands air force station, long-range air defense radar installation , highlands army air defense site (haads) constructed here. air force closed installation in 1966. army continued operate haads through 1974 support nike missile batteries throughout region, including later revealed historians @ nearby sandy hook recreation area carry nuclear warheads.
in january 2017 retired navy 16 /50 caliber mark 7 gun, formerly spare iowa-class battleships, placed on display in 1 of gun positions of battery lewis.
