"Paleosiberian" group Indigenous peoples of Siberia



four small language families , isolates, not known have linguistic relationship each other, compose paleo-siberian languages:



1. chukotko-kamchatkan family, known luoravetlan, includes chukchi , close relatives, koryak, alutor , kerek. itelmen, known kamchadal, distantly related. chukchi, koryak , alutor spoken in easternmost siberia communities numbering in thousands. kerek close extinction, , itelmen spoken fewer 100 people, elderly, on west coast of kamchatka peninsula.


2. yukaghir spoken in 2 mutually unintelligible varieties in lower kolyma , indigirka valleys. other languages, including chuvantsy, spoken further inland , further east, extinct. yukaghir held related uralic languages.


3. ket last survivor of small language family on middle yenisei , tributaries. has been claimed [1] related na-dene languages of north america, though hypothesis has met mixed reviews among historical linguists. in past, attempts have been made relate sino-tibetan, north caucasian, , burushaski.


4. nivkh spoken in lower amur basin , on northern half of sakhalin island. has recent modern literature , nivkhs have experienced turbulent history in last century.
