about marvelwood

marvelwood founded in 1956 in cornwall, connecticut, on campus occupied rumsey hall school. in 1995, marvelwood moved cramped campus in cornwall former kent school girls campus 10 miles (16 km) away on skiff mountain in kent, ct.

built in 1960s, campus has gone through number of renovations, , being updated meet needs of students , faculty. school completed capital campaign build new gymnasium , has begun new campaign build new performing arts center. campus relatively isolated , surrounded conservancy lands, under jurisdiction of kent land trust , sharon land trust.

marvelwood had no athletic mascot many years. in 1991, marvelwood students voted on school s first-ever mascot , chose pterodactyl in effort stand out other schools.

the marvelwood student body consists of boarding students, 13% of students commuting home. of boarding students, 30% international, coming countries such china, japan, south korea, spain, france, russia, , vietnam. school offers many esl classes accommodate foreign speakers.

marvelwood high school in north america participate in bird banding. weather station enables students take exact readings when birds captured. marvelwood works locally sharon audubon society , institute bird populations. cornell university s feeder watch survey uses marvelwood s weather data. marvelwood has annual science department trip panama, includes bird banding, insect , mammal research, , community service in villages in rainforest.

in effort go green , increase use of alternative energy throughout connecticut, marvelwood selected test site 2 wind turbines installed on campus. these determine source of renewable energy efficient state of connecticut use, provide energy school. former headmaster scott e. pottbecker said, turbines more of educational opportunity source of power school.

one of school s core values, service others, cornerstone of campus-wide community service program. students participate in 2 hours of community service every wednesday morning. placements range on-campus jobs recycling, clearing land land trusts surround campus. however, main goal of program has been helping less fortunate. placements off campus include working in nursing homes, daycares low income families, farm work, assisting elderly in own homes, , working in town s volunteer fire department. school s hope students continue habit of helping less fortunate after graduate.

established in 2006, women of marvelwood group brings female students, faculty, , staff members purpose of exploring variety of gender-specific concerns , issues, including self-esteem, nutrition , healthy eating, relationships, etiquette, portrayal of women in media, , roles , responsibilities of women in cultures around globe. goal marvelwood s young women become empowered, informed , confident , place , potential in world. group meets regularly on campus , sponsors variety of activities, including “candid conversations” series, handbag sale fundraisers, “pretty in pink” make-up parties, dinners, self-defense classes, jewelry-making, holiday parties, movie discussions, , “lock-in” slumber parties.

currently in third year, music on mountain created way showcase talented performers. held once per month, music on mountain open mic event hosting range of student , local performers. types of performers vary immensely, singers , musicians comedians , dancers.
