in 1970, degarthe created considered finest painting, out of mist, work pope called “simplified, condensed , more charged version of earlier themes”, depicting schooner in full sail emerging fog, seeming “to owe existence 2 worlds, seen , unseen, world of fact , world of fancy.” degarthe refused sell painting , remains on display in peggy’s cove gallery.


in 1958, degarthe exhibited 138 works @ halifax memorial library in show sponsored nova scotia museum of fine arts, art gallery of nova scotia. in 1959 on 100 of paintings exhibited @ queen elizabeth hotel in montreal. painting approaching storm voted popular @ 1959 maritime art exhibition @ beaverbrook art gallery in fredericton, new brunswick, canada. work shown in toronto, london, florida , barbados.


degarthe’s work became popular among individual , corporate collectors; sold first painting imperial bank of canada, canadian imperial bank of commerce, in 1949. in 1951, nova scotia light , power company, limited (nslp) commissioned degarthe paint nova scotia seascape cover of annual report. pleased result, artist , company continue relationship 2 decades. in all, degarthe created 21 paintings nslp. depicted scenes of atlantic coast, including fishers @ work , sailing vessels, series of 4 covers 1953 1956 featured scenes of halifax harbour. beginning in 1959, nslp produced fine art prints of degarthe s work made available @ no cost upon request. many years, framed copies of degarthe s paintings nslp common sight in nova scotia homes , offices.


degarthe authored , illustrated 3 books: peggy s cove nova scotia (1956), painting sea (1969), , story of herring gull: larus argentatus (1977).
