the idea big nickel began in 1963 when ted szilva, @ time 28-year-old city of sudbury fireman, read in sudbury star of contest, sponsored sudbury canada centennial committee (maurice lacourciere, chairman), asking sudbury residents how city should celebrate upcoming canadian centennial. szilva put forward suggestion major tourist attraction featuring giant replica of five-cent coin, underground mine , mining science centre. szilva’s idea rejected because committee felt did not have sufficient use citizens of sudbury such .


by time, szilva had independently researched idea, , had concluded indeed viable , worthwhile project. began make dream reality scouting out highest hills in sudbury find best location. on december 11, 1963, purchased 17.5 acres (7.1 ha) of land walter holdich $1,000.00 $25.00 down payment. land ideal because of unique location between sudbury , copper cliff. west, large, rocky mountain provided sensational view of inco mining , smelting complex, including nightly slag dump, while east 1 had beautiful view of city of sudbury.


after land acquired, city refused give szilva building permit monument, or road allowance access landlocked property, visited president of inco, john pigott, , requested lease 4 acres (1.6 ha) of adjacent inco land in copper cliff. acquisition ensure szilva have access land. inco did lease requested land, 99 years @ $1.00 per year. bought leased land inco, in addition 15 acres (61,000 m). szilva contracted firm build big nickel road, , pioneer construction paved new road. big nickel built on crest of hill, 3 feet outside of city of sudbury limits in copper cliff ontario, did not require building permit.
