in world war i

no. 63 squadron formed on 31 august 1916 @ stirling, scotland squadron of royal flying corps. squadron intended operate day-bomber unit on western front in france, , therefore equipped de havilland dh4 aircraft; @ last minute squadron re-tasked operate against turkish army in mesopotamia (iraq) , re-equipped r.e.8 s new mission, when squadron arrived in middle east in august 1917. no. 63 squadron remained in mesopotamia rest of war, , disbanded in 1920.


prelude war

in february 1937, royal air force unit, squadron refounded @ andover, hampshire bomber unit, , 3 months later became first unit receive fairey battle aircraft. in 1939 unit assigned aircrew training role, , received number of avro ansons, unit lost separate identity in april 1940 when became part of no. 12 otu.


in world war ii

on 15 june 1942 no. 63 squadron reformed part of no. 239 squadron @ raf gatwick, west sussex alison engined north american mustang s. in january 1944 squadron moved raf turnhouse in scotland , re-equipped hawker hurricane iv s in april 1944, converting supermarine spitfire vb s in may 1944. end of may squadron based @ rnas lee-on-solent, preparing d-day. during allied landings 63 squadron flew spotter flights above royal navy, providing form of forward air control (fac) naval gunners supporting troops on land. pilots of squadron @ stage drawn former army co-operation units, royal marines , raf. on 20 september 1944 squadron relocated raf north weald. squadron disbanded on 1 february 1945.


post-war: enter jets

no. 164 squadron renumbered no. 63 squadron on 1 september 1946, using spitfires. in april 1948 squadron re-equipped gloster meteor jet fighters. squadron moved waterbeach, cambridgeshire, in may 1950, remained until disbanded on 31 october 1958, having operated hawker hunter fighters last 2 years.

63 squadron reformed shadow unit day fighter combat squadron of central fighter establishment 30 november 1958 until 1 june 1963. on same day number transferred no. 229 operational conversion unit. based @ raf chivenor, north devon, shadow designation 1 of constituent squadrons. on 2 september 1970 no. 229 ocu re-designated tactical weapons unit , 63 squadron remained 1 of shadow units. 63 squadron transferred no 2 twu @ raf brawdy, operating hawker hunter aircraft, , later, bae hawk , when unit redesignated no 7 fts on 1 april 1992, 63 squadron remained component part until 23 september 1992; when 63 squadron last disbanded , role transferred 19(r) squadron.
