smari has long history , inhabited, according reliable sources, proto-minoan period onwards. archeological relics in akropolis of hill called profitis hlias, excavated under direction of archeologist d. hatzi vallianou, indicate continuous human presence middle-minoan period 630 b.c. on top of hill, on field surface of 30 40 m (131 ft). called troulli, surrounded fortification wall, 3 rectangular constructions matching megaron buildings excavated sanctuary of athina ergani, courtyards, , additional secondary buildings, dating geometric/eastern period (800-630 b.c.) earlier remains dating middle-minoan/old-palatial periods found, though architectural remains these periods have not been preserved except on surrounding wall, built according pythagorean theorem. according archeologist-researcher d.hadzi-vallianou these buildings seat of local hegemon (powerful leader) of area during geometric/eastern periods. detection of social structures similar described homer belonging aristocrats lead believe troulli seat of ancient homeric lyttos surrounding these buildings on top of troulli, excavations have revealed few more buildings, store rooms, workshops , 1 building containing pyre. in wider area of smari there have been discovered remains of ten buildings dating minoan roman empire periods, important of vaulted tomb @ hill of livaditsa , 1 roman rural residence @ entrance villa.
