each oral vowel has corresponding nasal vowel. there 3 vowel lengths: e.g. /bɛ/ red vs. /bɛ́ɛ/ belly vs. /bɛɛ́ɛ/ bread .


consonants

/c ɟ ɲ ɲɟ/ more dorso-postalveolar, palatal fricative /ç/ dorso-palatal.


tone

the language has 2 surface tones, high , low. stress in european words replaced high tone in saramaccan.
