with success of october revolution of 1917 , subsequent establishment of soviet union, atheism became state sanctioned belief system , church (along associated organs) repressed. shortly thereafter authorities of newly proclaimed ukrainian soviet socialist republic ordered closure of kiev theological academy; library later plundered , main church of school, bogoyavlenskiy cathedral, demolished explosives in 1935.

following perestroika , fall of ussr in 1991, kyiv-mohyla academy reestablished. made possible through efforts of vyacheslav bryukhovetskiy - high profile ukrainian academic - later became first president of national university of kyiv-mohyla academy (naukma). reestablished institution became first ukrainian educational institution modelled on , structured according basic concepts of north american higher educational system, bachelor s , master s degrees offered according requirements of academic credit system.


on 24 august 1992 – first anniversary of ukraine s independence, first cohort of students matriculated @ naukma, , june 1995 first 6 graduates of reborn kyiv-mohyla academy had received degrees. since then, naukma s reputation academic excellence has become known throughout ukraine; university consistently ranked 1 of country s top educational institutions.


in 1994 naukma key lobbyist , partner in revival of historically noteworthy ukrainian educational institution, ostroh academy. today ostroh academy maintains strong links naukma and, in year 2000, joined 1 of ukraine s 19 national research universities.


the naukma got known being first university of students , professors (among other parties of orange revolution in kyiv) openly protested against massive electoral selection fraud during ukrainian presidential election in 2004. after events museum dedicated orange revolution (pomarancheva revolyuziya-ukr.) opened @ naukma.
