historically, prominent issue perceived problem of legal sports betting. traditionally, 4 major professional sports leagues had strong anti-gambling policies, prohibiting personnel having involvement in gambling. nfl took toughest stance, refusing accept las vegas tourism advertising super bowl telecasts , threatening file suit against local hotels holding super bowl parties. hotels got around legal threat referring super bowl big game rather actual name in advertising. in addition, potential owners believed professional sports franchise have difficulty gaining audience, given las vegas s numerous entertainment options. number of prior professional football teams in city ranked @ or near last in leagues in attendance on years, such las vegas posse, las vegas locomotives , arena football las vegas outlaws. las vegas has high percentage of residents working in 24-hour occupations, many of whom work nights , weekends when games played. several owners of other sports franchises disagreed. miami marlins owner jeffrey loria described las vegas potential gold mine professional sports team owner. dallas mavericks owner mark cuban quoted saying las vegas professional sports town.


as 4 leagues embraced daily fantasy sports (dfs) , mobile sports betting became more prevalent perceptions 4 major professional sports leagues had of las vegas changed , doors opened major pro sports in market. nba commissioner adam silver said in favor of regulated, legalized sports gambling , later nhl became first of 4 professional sports leagues land in vegas, expansion team vegas golden knights debuting in october 2017. nfl, once staunch opponent of las vegas, became second of 4 leagues come vegas relocation of oakland raiders area 2020.


prior opening of t-mobile arena in april 2016, major obstacle lack of suitable facilities. city did not have facility large enough or modern enough host mlb or nfl team. while thomas & mack center , mgm grand garden arena large enough on paper host nba or nhl team, not suitable beyond temporary use due age and/or design issues.


harrah s entertainment , anschutz entertainment group committed building new arena on parcel of land behind harrah s paris , bally s off strip, built nhl , nba standards. arena expected open in fall of 2010, construction never began. harrah s entertainment ceo gary loveman said in june, 2009 article in las vegas business press company still committed building arena, delayed lack of financing. on april 6, 2010 las vegas review-journal reported 3 proposals had been made build arena of approximately 20,000 seats on or near strip host professional basketball , hockey, rodeo, concerts , other events. 3 proposals called public money used portion of construction cost. on november 5, 2013, las vegas news media reported plans joint-venture arena built on strip backing parties being aeg , mgm resorts. located @ former parking lot @ of monte carlo, t-mobile arena seats 20,000 , costs $350 million. ground broken on may 2014, opening on april 6, 2016.


cashman field planned replaced baseball las vegas ballpark in summerlin 2019. sam boyd stadium scheduled replaced las vegas stadium home of las vegas raiders , unlv football beginning in 2020. ground broken las vegas stadium on november 13, 2017.
