in 1981, vangelis wrote score film chariots of fire, set @ 1924 summer olympics. choice of music unorthodox period films featured traditional orchestral scores, whereas vangelis music modern , synthesizer-heavy. movie won academy award best picture , vangelis won academy award best original music score. opening theme of film released single in 1982, topping american billboard chart 1 week after climbing steadily 5 months. used @ 1984 winter olympics. vangelis commented main inspiration story itself. rest did instinctively, without thinking else, other express feelings technological means available me @ time .


blade runner

in 1982, vangelis collaborated director ridley scott, write score science fiction film blade runner. critics have written capturing isolation , melancholy of harrison ford s character, rick deckard, vangelis score part of dystopian environment decaying buildings , ever-present rain. music score nominated bafta , golden globe award.


a disagreement led vangelis withholding permission performance of music blade runner released, , studio instead hired group of musicians dubbed new american orchestra record official lp released @ time. took 12 years before disagreement resolved , vangelis s own work released in united states, in 1994. soundtrack still incomplete, film contained non-vangelis tracks well. on years number of bootleg recordings of blade runner soundtrack unknown sources have been released, targeted collectors private releases , contain of music cues (including ladd company logo theme). official three-disc box set released in late 2007 commemorate film s 25th anniversary: contained original 1994 album, second disc containing more of missing music cues , third disc of new vangelis material inspired blade runner. 2007 release still lacks incidental music, notably background music taffey lewis bar scene featuring vocals demis roussos. 35th anniversary lp of original soundtrack released on record store day 2017.

in 1992, paramount pictures released film 1492: conquest of paradise, directed ridley scott, 500th anniversary commemoration of christopher columbus voyage new world. vangelis s score nominated best original score – motion picture @ 1993 golden globe awards, not nominated academy award. however, due success vangelis won echo award international artist of year , , rtl golden lion award best title theme tv film or series in 1996.
