crnjanski born in csongrád, hungary, impoverished family moved in 1896 temesvár (today timişoara, romania) grew in patriarchal-patriotic community implanted cult of serbia , serbian heritage in soul precious relic. 1 of deepest , longest lasting sensations of childhood national , religious content: church school, st. sava icon, incense, serbian orthodox cemetery burial ceremonies, evening stories , songs serbia, hajduks, , ottoman turkish oppression – of in boy s emotions transferred continual unrest, became everlasting source of hope, joy, doubt, disappointment , rebelliousness. completed elementary school in pančevo, , grammar school in timişoara. started attending export academy in rijeka in 1912, , in autumn of following year started studying in vienna.


at beginning of world war i, crnjanski persecuted part of general anti-serbian retribution of austria princip s assassination in sarajevo, instead of being sent jail, drafted army , sent galician frontline fight against russians wounded in 1915. during of these tragic war days, crnjanski spent time alone in vienna war hospital, although before end of war sent italian front. in memory, sights of havoc of war impressed unerasably. after war, completed studies of art history , philosophy in vienna , graduated university of belgrade 1 of students of famous literature critic bogdan popovic.
