the name of island, ada međica, serbian border river island centuries sava river border of many states (roman empire, byzantine empire, kingdom of hungary, serbia, ottoman empire, habsburg monarchy, etc.). island on borderline today belongs municipality of novi beograd, , 100 m (330 ft) away ada ciganlija belongs municipality of Čukarica.


the island previously, @ least until world war i, known ada zanoga.


in 1962 first settlers began visiting island when first stilt houses constructed. first 1 tree house constructed peđa ristić (sr), architect , artsts, nicknamed peđa isus (jesus). in 1963 care of island has been entrusted municipal government “society of sava , danube devotees” 99 years, ordered decision of supreme court of yugoslavia. stilt houses first built on side facing ada ciganlija , later side facing new belgrade s block 44 developed. city later sued society wanting island back, lost in court.


when 3 km (1.9 mi) long international swimming marathon ada međica organized in july 2016, non-exploded, 50 kg (110 lb) heavy world war ii bomb discovered near island s tip, @ depth of 11 m (36 ft). bomb removed , destroyed. marathon, known 1 of rare swimming events in serbia includes swimming upstream, planned annual event , second outing in 2017 dedicated celebration of 55 years since first houses built on island.
