the small township once artists colony, attracted artisans, musicians, composers , actors los angeles area. mountain travelers in 19th century came big bear valley through fawnskin on rough road stagecoach , later motorcars. several other names temporarily chosen north shore village including bald eagle valley, big bear village, cline-miller, grout, , oso grande.


the village has been attraction vacationers seeking retreat city life in mountain terrain. several hundred homes in forested mountainside adjacent forest.


gold miners, loggers, , hunters drawn adjacent holcomb valley during 19th century. native american legend how town got name has been turned urban legend. anglo version hunters discovered deer (fawn) skins stretched out dry in sun. hence, area became known fawn skin , later fawnskin.


fawnskin once hub of lakeside activity, serving stagecoach stop , tourist attraction hotels , dining. town s main landmark fawn lodge, built in 1924, closed. composer fannie charles dillon founded woodland theater @ fawnskin, big bear lake, california, in 1924 , served general manager 1926 1929.


other notable landmarks include pedersen saw mill, lies west of lodge; , historic post office, lies east of lodge private home rental. downtown fawnskin has of oldest buildings in big bear valley.


once popular camping, lighthouse camp , landing surviving north shore camp 1920s. hanna flats , ymca camp whittle—owned , operated metropolitan los angeles ymca—are located within forest above fawnskin , remain favorites of vacationers.


fawnskin events include comic doo dah parade , loggers’ jubilee. town claims honest election in nation. can vote fawnskin mayor; votes donations of quarter. candidate wins 1 raises money. hence, town buys politicians.


today, fawnskin designated protective habitat golden , american bald eagles. return annually valley november april.


in 1998, multimillion-dollar big bear discovery center built , plans expand. facility operated partnership between forest service , san bernardino national forest association.
