souham served in royal french army private 1782 1790. in 1792, having shown himself active in cause of revolution, elected commandant of volunteer battalion corrèze. served unit @ battle of jemappes.


by 1793, souham had risen rank of general de division during flanders campaign. when army commander, jean-charles pichegru fell ill, souham assumed army command , defeated allied army @ battle of tourcoing in may 1794. served under pichegru in holland (1795), in 1799 fell disgrace on suspicion of being involved in royalist intrigues. reinstated in 1800 , served under jean moreau in danube campaign of year. during consulate appears have been involved in conspiracies , suspected old commanders moreau , pichegru of participation in plot of georges cadoudal.
