the railway owns every remaining narrow gauge locomotive of former victorian railways, , has restored operating condition except one, although not in serviceable condition @ 1 time. fleet comprises 5 restored , 1 unrestored 2-6-2t na class locomotives (3a unrestored, while 6a, 7a, 8a, 12a , 14a have been restored), , 1 g class garratt (g 42) locomotive. restored, or being restored, represent different eras in working life.


the railway has number of other steam locomotives various sources in museum collection, either on static display or in operating condition. these include peckett 0-4-0st , decauville 0-4-0t formerly west melbourne gasworks, , climax geared locomotive tyers valley tramway. none of these locomotives powerful or fast enough operate on regular services, can seen on special trains , @ events such thomas tank engine days.


puffing billy offers driver experience days on smaller steam engines. climax engine has been restored purpose engine has commodious driving cab , unique in australia.


the railway operates 3 diesel locomotives used on days of total fire ban, plant or works trains, or when insufficient steam locomotives available, including in emergencies. diesel locomotives operated on railways in tasmania (d21, formerly v12) , queensland (dh5, formerly dh5 , later cc02, , dh31, formerly dh59), , regauged , rebuilt use on puffing billy railway.

the mainstay of carriage fleet 15 nbh open-sided carriages built specially tourist traffic on gembrook line vr between 1918 , 1919, , further 10 vehicles built same or similar design in preservation era. however, there number of enclosed carriages, both saloon , compartment cars. in addition, 4 carriages obtained mount lyell railway in tasmania after closure in 1963, , regauged , reclassified puffing billy use, numbered 1–4nal. named mt lyell, double barril, rinadeena & teepookana reflect tasmanian heritage. these vehicles used first-class carriages , used on luncheon train , dinner train.


several carriages have been temporarily converted include guard s compartment. number of nqr low-sided goods trucks have been modified passenger use, making them similar nbh carriages. 3 nqr trucks have been fitted seats no roof , used during summer peak season.
