the greatest controversy of first season underarm incident, involved 2 younger brothers in odi played between australia , new zealand @ mcg. chappell showed no fraternal bias , vehement in criticism of brother greg s tactic. wrote in newspaper column on matter: fair dinkum, greg, how pride sacrifice win $35,000?


kim hughes

he supported claims of rod marsh australian captaincy on incumbent, kim hughes, in 1980s. constant campaign against hughes destabilised authority. compounding situation, acb compelled hughes interviewed chappell on regular basis.


during 1981 ashes, ian chappell introduced interview between hughes , richie benaud claiming australian captain thought of dumb , couldn t run bath , keeps getting caught @ deep fine leg. criticised hughes batting. hughes needs score runs when needed most. not doing , inconsistency rubbing off on others... there not lot of thought in batting .


on morning of second test against west indies in 1984–85, chappell asked hughes 3 months ago, claimed australia possessed no test-worthy legspinner. bob holland doing in team? hughes resigned captain after match.


following hughes resignation, australian cricket went turmoil , chappell received share of blame outcome.


allan border & bob simpson

chappell had direct influence on hughes successor, allan border. in captaincy tenure, border struggling burdens of position acb appointed bob simpson team coach assist. led animosity between chappell , simpson chappell derided need coach. simpson responded writing peer influence of older players helping younger players fell away during era when chappell brothers led team, , redressing problem.


chappell believed border-simpson leadership defensive , simpson usurped of border s control of team; border heeded chappell s assessment , adopted more aggressive on-field approach later in career , became known captain grumpy team mates. mark taylor, captained team after border, moved dilute simpson s authority. chappell remains long-standing critic of use of coaches national teams.


steve waugh

ian chappell critical of steve waugh captain, believing him selfish player , unimaginative captain. when waugh appointed captain in 1999 chappell said:



i think s been selfish cricketer . . . ve felt things player leading getting captaincy have effect [on] how players perceive you. ve had feeling selfish player when becomes captain . . . gets little less out of players not selfish.



chappell felt shane warne should have been picked captain instead , criticism of waugh s captaincy did not abate during waugh s stint in role, despite success. waugh later wrote of chappell:



ian chappell … sweated on blunders , reported them told mentality... chappell s criticism irked me understatement, though knew that, anyone, entitled opinion. don t mind fact criticised me — in fact, rather make judgement not, have felt critic must either constructive or base comments on fact... had live with, , when realised never going cut me slack, decided said positive bonus , rest cast aside.



chappell rated ricky ponting better captain waugh.
