hughes stadium hosted 16 college football bowl games known camellia bowl between 1961 , 1980. 1961-63 games naia national football championship. 1964-72 camellia bowl games part of set of bowls led poll determine ncaa college division championship, prior current division ii playoff structure, initiated in 1973. site of third division i-aa championship game in 1980, in boise state defeated defending champion eastern kentucky in fog on december 20.

the sacramento capitols of continental football league used hughes stadium home field in 1968 , 1969, before league folded.

the sacramento solons, triple-a minor league baseball team affiliated milwaukee brewers played 3 seasons in hughes stadium 1974 1976. in 1976, solons affiliation changed texas rangers. football , track stadium, field expectedly unsuitable baseball, left field foul line reportedly 233 feet long, or 17 feet shorter minimum requirement 250 feet, baseballs hit on high screen still counted home runs. photo, though exaggerated due zoom lens, provides sense of closeness of left field area.

though sacramento state , uc davis traditionally switched stadiums annual causeway classic football game, hughes stadium used third-party venue several games in 1970s, 1980 s, 1990 s , last in 2002. hughes stadium host of famous mud bowl in 2000, wind , rain strong uc davis punt flew backwards during game.

the expansion usl pro soccer club sacramento republic fc played first few home games of 2014 @ hughes stadium, per-game attendance dwarfed of rest of league, , recorded 3 sellouts. team left hughes in june 2014 bonney field, newly built facility in cal expo full-sized soccer field , lower capacity.
