during 1990s there had been increase in second home ownership, particularly in upper wharfedale area. 1991 census had shown 13% of homes in craven district classified second properties. 2001 census showed figure upper wharfedale 15%, had dropped 7% 2011.

upper wharfedale has been traditionally associated farming, there has been change in numbers , types of employment. whilst there declines in number of people in industry, farming accounted directly 9.16% of employment in 2001 had increased 11.27% 2011.

lead mining once main industry in wharfedale. 17th century late 19th century employed hundreds of men , boys, exploiting veins in limestone @ greenhow, hebden, grassington, linton , conistone, appletreewick , elsewhere. heaps of mining waste remain, contaminated lead, , on little grow. few plants known lead plants such spring sandwort , alpine penny-cress.

tourism important rural economy of wharfedale , there many short, mid , long distance walks, clear waymarkers. other outdoor activities take place such rock climbing, notably @ kilnsey crag, , canoeing. other activities include cycling, mountain biking, horse riding , caving. several long distance walks pass near or on river:

dales way (follows river valley beckermonds ilkley)
lady anne s way (enters valley near hubberholme , leaves west of bolton abbey)
inn way yorkshire dales (part of walk grassington buckden)
the way of roses (part of cycle route appletreewick thorpe)
