the 3 gorges dam constructed @ place called sāndòupíng in middle of xiling gorge. reservoir dam completed in summer of 2006, , water level reached maximum level of 110m above downstream river. project completed end of 2008, although ship lift still under construction, , expected completed in 2015.


the dam , 3 gorges reservoir has had massive impact on region s ecology , people, involving mass relocation of towns , villages. higher water level has changed scenery of 3 gorges river wider , mountains appear lower. however, mountains still tower above river, , gorges continue offer spectacular views of surrounding cliffs.


the riverboat companies operating on 3 gorges experiencing increase in demand river cruises. increased width , depth of river permits larger ships through gorges, , there has been significant increase in river traffic of kinds, including bulk cargo , container barges.
