metrorail

since opening in 1976, metrorail network has grown include 6 lines, 91 stations, , 117 miles (188 km) of track. second-busiest rapid transit system in united states in number of passenger trips, after new york city subway. there 215.3 million trips, or 727,684 trips per weekday, on metrorail in fiscal year 2008. in june 2008, metro set new monthly ridership record 19,729,641 trips, or 798,456 per weekday. on april 2, 2010, metrorail set new ridership record of 891,240 trips. during 2010, metrorail had 217.2 million trips. fares vary based on distance traveled , time of day. riders enter , exit system using proximity card known smartrip; magnetic stripe tickets stopped being accepted on march 6, 2016. metrorail s frequency of service , fares vary depending on available subsidy, particular transit line, , distance traveled.

metrobus

metrobus fleet consists of 1,505 buses covering area of 1,500 square miles (3,900 km²) in washington, d.c., maryland, , virginia. there more 300 bus routes serving 12,216 stops, including 2,398 bus shelters. in fiscal year 2009, metrobus provided more 133 million trips. metrobus had 130.8 million trips in fy2015. on typical weekday, provides more 400,000 trips.


metro has awarded five-year contract nabi (now new flyer) procurement of 654 new buses. first batch of 85 nabi diesel-electric hybrid 42-foot buses on order, delivery expected within year. new buses replace of metro’s older orion v, neoplan an460a , new flyer c40lf buses, delivered in 1997-2002. going forward, contract gives metro option order 498 additional 42-foot buses , 71 60-foot buses on five-year period. red/silver painted buses used on local routes , blue/silver buses used on metroextra routes. these buses have either red stripe in front of bus local routes or blue stripe in front of bus metroextra routes easy identification. numbering represents region of operation. differ regions numbering system, maryland letter (prefix) route number , virginia letter (suffix) route number. example: c22 (maryland) & 15l (virginia).


metroaccess

metroaccess paratransit service wmata provides through private contractors. began operation in may 1994 , since time annual ridership has grown 200,000 more 2.4 million passengers. metroaccess operates 365 days year, providing door-to-door, shared rides reserved 1 7 days in advance. sixth largest paratransit service in united states fleet of more 600 vehicles , more 1,000 employees. wmata staff determines eligibility use service in response written applications. cost per passenger metroaccess higher fixed-route counterparts, , metro has worked provide many opportunities encourage , facilitate use of fixed-route transit customers disabilities.
