2010

on july 28, 2010, metrolinx ordered 4 tunnel boring machines (tbms) caterpillar @ cost of $54 million. each tbm 10 metres long, 6.5 metres in diameter , weighs 400 tons. bore 10 metres per day, 16-20 metres below surface. tbms named dennis, lea, humber, , don. names chosen jason paris, moderator of urbantoronto blog , forums. dennis named after mount dennis, lea named after leaside, humber named after humber river, , don named after don river. names dennis , lea combined allude poet dennis lee. time 4 machines reach yonge street, enough dirt have been removed fill air canada centre height of cn tower.



2011

in october 2011, first part of tunnel construction began construction of launch shaft tunnel boring machines @ black creek drive.


on november 9, 2011, in keelesdale park, mayor rob ford , then-premier dalton mcguinty officially broke ground on new project.



2012

in may 2012, ttc staff released report saying completion of eglinton crosstown unlikely 2020 , more realistic in-service date 2022–2023. main reason given project management had been transferred ttc infrastructure ontario uses alternative finance , procurement strategy. strategy use private contractor complete project, requiring contractor redo design work completed ttc. ttc warned metrolinx’s aggressive timeline lead severe construction-related disruptions communities , traffic because large stretches of eglinton avenue have torn concurrently meet deadlines.



2013

in january 2013, infrastructure ontario issued request qualifications shortlist companies construct line. request proposal expected in summer of 2013.


on february 22, 2013, tbms don , lea arrived in keelesdale park.


in june 2013, tbms don , lea began tunnelling on line. traffic on eglinton avenue near keele street reduced 1 lane in each direction.


on november 12, 2013, metrolinx awarded contract construct eastern portion of crosstown joint venture between aecon group inc. , acs dragados canada inc. construct eastern portion of line between yonge street , laird drive.



2014

in march 2014, work began clear utilities , trees on south side of eglinton avenue east of brentcliffe road in order set eastern launch shaft. 2 , half years, traffic around excavation site reduced 2 1 lane in each direction. west of site, more lane restrictions go effect construct head walls (below-ground walls form ends of each subway station) @ future laird, bayview , mt. pleasant stations. there lane restrictions 2 years near hanna road build emergency exit near leaside high school.


by april 2014, tbms had arrived @ caledonia station. in april 2014, globe , mail reported 2 western tunnel boring machines excavating approximately 1,000 cubic yards of spoil , per day.


for year prior may 2014, 2 tbms dennis , lea had been excavating , installing concrete tunnel liners @ rate of approximately 10 metres (33 ft) per day. tunnels lined precast concrete liner segments. 6 2.5 tonne-segments form each ring.


in december 2014, dennis , lea arrived @ eglinton west station. dennis stopped allow lea catch up, arrive @ eglinton west station @ same time.



2015

on weekend of april 18–19, 2015, boring machines, dennis , lea, lifted out of shaft west of allen road , moved 100 metres shaft east of allen road.


in april 2015, merchants along eglinton avenue west complaining of lost revenue (up 35% dip in sales), because construction discouraging customers snarled traffic, limited parking options, reduced foot traffic , dusty sidewalks.


by september 2015, tbms don , humber arrived assembly in shaft @ brentcliffe road before starting drill 3.25-kilometre (2.02 mi) section west yonge street.


on september 24, 2015, transportation minister steven del duca issued statement saying crosstown not operate until september 2021, in order “to mitigate disruption local community , infrastructure as possible.” earlier plan had been open in 2020 tunnelling , station construction start in 2012. infrastructure ontario has awarded crosstown construction contract crosslinx, consortium led snc lavalin. take 4 years build stations, 15 of underground.


on september 29, 2015, tbm don started bore north tunnel brentcliffe road launching site westward towards yonge street. tbm humber start boring south tunnel approximately 1 month later.


on november 3, 2015, del duca announced contract awarded crosslinx transit solutions complete crosstown , maintain 30 years cost $2 billion less estimated.



2016

on march 10, 2016, ground-breaking ceremony held @ site of keelesdale station, first station started construction along eglinton crosstown line.


in february 2016, work began on extraction shaft tbms humber , don, digging eastern segment of line. however, hole in street there smaller 1 near leslie street.


on april 18, 2016, façade of former house of chan restaurant , scaffolding hold collapsed, injuring 7 people. location used forest hill lrt station.


on may 10, tbms dennis , lea, had been boring western segment of line, completed work reaching yonge street. dennis , lea bored 6.4 kilometres installing 25,647 precast concrete tunnel segments construct 4,279 rings line twin tunnels.


on august 17, tbms don , humber, had been boring eastern segment of line, completed work reaching yonge street. don , humber bored 3.3 kilometres installing 26,178 precast concrete tunnel segments construct 4,363 rings line twin tunnels.


on september 1, bombardier transportation, producing cars line, failed meet delivery deadline pilot vehicle. result, metrolinx filed notice terminate contract bombardier.


on november 3, 2016, metrolinx file notice of intention cancel contract bombardier crosstown s rolling stock.



2017

on february 10, 2017, bombardier filed injunction, seeking compel metrolinx stick contract. metrolinx responded bombardier did deliver prototype testing, required contract. however, metrolinx claimed prototype incomplete not power up.


between march 13 , 17, tbms don , humber removed in pieces extraction shaft on eglinton avenue east of yonge street.


in july 2017, construction crews began preparation constructing eastern at-grade portion of line removing median in roadway.


on august 9, first piece of track, turnout, installed @ eglinton maintenance , storage facility in mount dennis. facility scheduled completion in 2018.



2021

metrolinx expects line completed.


crosslinx

crosslinx transit solutions, consortium of more 26 companies, awarded contract design, build , finance eglinton crosstown line , maintain 30 years. contract, excludes boring tunnels, completing other remaining work, including stations , finishing work within tunnels. of members of consortium snc-lavalin, aecon, ellisdon, acs infrastructure canada, dragados, ibi group , bank of nova scotia. contract defines public–private partnership.


the 30-year contract build , maintain line total $9.1 billion. capital costs $5.3 billion, each of 15 underground stations costing $80–$100 million build , ten street-level stops $3-$5 million each. remainder financing, lifecycle , maintenance costs.


unique station names

in planning stages line 5 eglinton, many stations , stops given working names identical names of pre-existing stations within toronto subway system. on november 23, 2015, report ttc board recommended giving unique name each station within subway system (including line 5 eglinton). thus, several stations non-unique working names renamed (new name in brackets): keele (keelesdale), dufferin (fairbank), bathurst (forest hill), bayview (leaside), leslie (sunnybrook park), don mills (science centre), victoria park (o connor) , warden (golden mile). despite unique name, eglinton west station renamed cedarvale avoid confusion eglinton station.
