in 2008, reports claimed that, following film s commercial success, soundarya rajinikanth planning make sequel, produced ocher studios in association warner bros. however, sequel did not materialise , idea dropped, ajith kumar, vishnuvardhan , soundarya getting busy other projects.


in mid-2010, sources confirmed vishnuvardhan had finished penning script prequel , ajith kumar reprise titular character. project became officially announced in late 2010, after ajith kumar signed , first production poster published media. suresh balaje, son of producer , actor k. balaje, produced original billa rajinikanth, , george pius wide angle creations banner, confirmed producer, associated mumbai-based in entertainment limited, hinduja group company. however, in turn of events, vishnuvardhan replaced chakri toleti, , new script written toleti , assistants. prequel released @ 13 july 2012.
