in spring 1967 4 friends, frank n. mora iii (puerto rico), jeremy pike (australia), nick schoular (united kingdom), , geoff tyers (united kingdom) led effort bring sport of rugby clemson university. during first few years team struggled through many years of hardships new teams working increase membership, secure matches , develop coaching skills. time passed, however, team improved. in 1971, clemson rugby secured significant upset victory on yale — 1970 ivy league champions on 19-game winning streak. clemson rugby became major force in collegiate rugby.


during first half of 1970s club 1 of handful in south. result, led team consistently competing against university of north carolina, charleston rugby club, n.c. state, atlanta old white , medical college of georgia. in 1973 clemson rugby alumni jim mcmillan helped found rugby team @ medical college of georgia. in 1972 club took first international tour bahamas. club lost tight match freeport rugby club due questionable call referee in last minute of match. freeport rugby club @ time had never lost u.s. team.


in november 1980 team hosted acc rugby tournament in clemson. after series of challenging matches team ended facing university of virginia in finals. match played in cold , yet conditions; however, clemson emerged victorious. during mid-1980s club continued play full spring , fall schedules, adding list of rival clubs belmont abbey, wake forest, olde grey, johnson city , citadel. tour florida made in spring 1985.


in 1989, clemson rugby finished 12th in country undefeated record. 1990s time change within clemson rugby. former clemson player frank graziano (class of 1977) became program s first ever head coach in 1991. graziano instilled idea of field dominance nationally. during coach graziano s time team, clemson rugby achieved several major accomplishments: clemson s first undefeated season, georgia rugby union champions, number 1 ranking in southeast, , entrance quarterfinals of national playoffs tigers matched against penn state after first-round victory on cornell university.


in clemson rugby s 30th year , in same school year of coach graziano s departure usa rugby collegiate director position, tigers remained strong. tigers performed against university teams throughout south. difficult fall led successful spring semester in clemson rugby again in national spotlight. after defeating every southern team faced, tigers headed round of 16 of national playoffs.


clemson s best season 1996, when team advanced national college rugby quarterfinals. clemson advanced round of 16 of national playoffs 3 consecutive years 2005-2007. clemson has played since 2011 in atlantic coast rugby league against traditional acc rivals. clemson placed second in conference in spring 2012 season 6-1 conference record, missing out maryland conference title , place in national college rugby playoffs. clemson finished spring 2013 season 6-1 conference record, , defeated south carolina 29-7 in round of 16 national playoffs, before losing in quarterfinals central florida 20-24.
