prior 1946, mountain had been site of skiing using crude boat lift, , use of jeep trails side of mountain on midnight mine road. in 1941, aspen’s first national downhill , slalom championships held march 8–9. fritz benedict visited aspen first time, father of 10th mountain hut , trail system. foundation of ski area in 1946 accomplished installation of single-seat chairlift, lift-1. when began operations on december 14, 1946, longest chairlift in world. many of first employees veterans of 10th mountain division, had trained @ camp hale, including friedl pfeifer of austria , pete seibert. before war, pfeifer had headed ski school @ sun valley , did same @ aspen; seibert member of aspen ski patrol later found vail mountain (in 1962). in fourth season, aspen hosted 1950 world championships, first world championships held outside of europe, , first since 1939.


lift-1 ran until 1972, when replaced 2 double chairlifts, shadow mountain (commonly referrred 1a) , ruthie s. access mountain radically changed in 1986 installation of silver queen gondola, ascends summit east side of area vertical rise of 3,267 ft (996 m). area s lifts include 1 high-speed quad, 1 high-speed double, 2 quads, , 3 doubles.

the ski area has unique homespun culture dates foundation part of utopian social experiment in aspen created walter paepcke in 1940s, retaining of throwback culture in comparison other 3 areas of complex. culture reflected in numerous homemade memorials , tributes dot trees of mountains created in honor of famous personages such john denver , hunter s. thompson.
