background

one day after 97x left fm airwaves, on friday, may 14, 2004, representatives of anonymous angel investors contacted station staff, intent on funding woxy.com venture. after 2 months of legalities, on july 12, 2004, future of rock , roll resumed woxy.com broadcast. subtle nod 1983 fm debut ( sunday bloody sunday irish band u2), first song played on resumed woxy.com broadcast orpheus irish alternative rock band ash.


because of nature of 97.7 fm sale first broadcasting out of texas, future of rock & roll able continue broadcasting oxford, ohio building until more touring musician friendly location found. in september 2004, woxy.com operations relocated cincinnati s longworth hall, building @ intersection of 3 interstate highways , close multiple concert venues.


publicity

to herald return broadcasting, future of rock & roll relied on viral campaign carried out loyal listeners. woxy provided via website, avatars, banners, buttons, pdf files, etc., intention of getting word out; future of rock & roll back! station purchased placed ads in music oriented magazines.


programming

the internet allowed more programming avenues , outlets standard fm radio ever did. future of rock , roll continued find innovative ways program station.



bam! modern rock: new engine driving music, future of rock , roll remained true roots; real djs programming music choose modern rock library have been building upon since beginning.
woxy lounge acts
woxy vintage: in 2005, future of rock & roll looked fondly towards past , launched secondary stream of audio, woxy vintage. additional channel featured 30-year mix of music spotlighted history of modern rock , alternative music.

most closely resembling fm future of rock , roll , woxy.com, or woxy (wox-ie) become known, sold banner ads on pages of woxy.com along advertised sponsorship of mainstay programming cover costs. not did practice not yield profit, did not cover operational costs. accepting investor money eroding faster hoped, future of rock & roll tried new approach.


subscription-based

on february 6, 2006, woxy.com announced moving subscriber-based model. in effort counteract lack of advertising revenue, subscribers pay $9.95 per month 128 kbit/s streams (both main channel , vintage channel) other perks including special content , contests.


despite popularity listeners, station s capital running out, , costs operate far exceeded income subscriptions, fund raising, or internet advertising. on august 31, 2006, woxy.com released statement announcing cease broadcasting. last broadcast september 15, 2006, , transmission ended around 5:38 p.m. edt.


bryan jay miller, station s general manager, stated in written announcement on station s website barring exceptional happening in next 2 weeks, silence our broadcasts. last few songs station played underscored believed finality of suspension of broadcasting, including songs mourning air portishead, acquiesce oasis, fight power , public enemy, , final track, mc5 s song kick out jams .


lala.com

on september 19, 2006, silicon valley entrepreneur bill nguyen expressed interest in purchasing station , resuming online broadcasting. fan of modern rock, nguyen contacted station listener through music trading website lala. in unusual approach, nguyen not met staff members , station s current anonymous owners/investors, used station s message boards feedback listeners before formally making offer.


nguyen s proposal invest between $5 million , $10 million woxy.com, , allow station remain in cincinnati. djs retain editorial control. link lala.com woxy.com, allow woxy.com listeners purchase music ve heard on station directly existing site. among many initial proposals, proposed coordinating live performances in san francisco , other locations subsequently broadcast on woxy.com. deal reached, , station resumed online broadcasting of 10:10 est on october 10, 2006.


it should note lala.com quietly purchased apple in december 2009 , shuttered apple on may 31, 2010.


future sounds inc.

on february 5, 2009, station announced had been sold lala.com , join future sounds, inc. company specializing in discovery , exposure of new , unsigned bands , artists. futuresounds.com website sale no other active web presence known.


wvxu-hd2 simulcast

in august 2007, deal finalized between woxy.com , cincinnati public radio station wvxu in, wvxu partner future of rock & roll , broadcast woxy.com main channel programming on second hd radio channel. availability of woxy.com on hd radio marked future of rock , roll s return local terrestrial airwaves since 97.7 fm transmission terminated.


austin, tx relocation

on july 16, 2009, woxy staff formally announced station s broadcast facilities relocated austin, texas. reasons cited include increased access artists live lounge act sessions , proximity thriving austin music scene, including sxsw festival. station move faq has indicated formatting , live dj lineup remain same. station continue broadcasting on air in cincinnati via wvxu 91.7 fm on hd-2 sideband channel.


shutdown

at approximately 9:13 cdt on march 23, 2010 woxy.com stopped streaming audio, , posted following on main page:
