the second generation of diamante introduced japanese market in january 1995. sigma variant eliminated , not renewed second generation, due poor sales in japan; sigmas sold had become taxis , patrol cars.


the diamante marginally larger improved headroom. powered several engines: base engine 2.5-liter mvv (lean burn) v6, followed number of 2.5 , 3.5-liter variants, 2.5-liter engine sported 175 hp , 3.5-liter engine boasted 210 hp (160 kw). new diamante range in japan topped off 3.0-liter mivec v6 rated @ 201 kw (270 hp) @ 6000 rpm , 304 n·m (224 lb·ft) @ 4500 rpm. in latter years, diamante range reduced single engine offering in japan, first 3.0-liter gdi v6 240 hp (180 kw) (the first of kind), , conventional 2.5-liter v6.


the australian produced verada came off production line on 1 july 1996, , formed basis of diamantes sold outside japan. both verada (designated ke series in australia) , magna (te series) on based, won 1996 wheels magazine s car of year award.


sales on market commenced 1997 model year in late october 1996, occupied near luxury segment , competed on price vehicles lexus es 300. diamante featuring export-only equipment such keyless entry, never featuring tiptronic or five-speed automatic transmission or eventual wheel drive (awd) drivetrain became available australian , new zealand range (respectively badged verada , diamante).

the world s first five-speed automatic transmission in transverse-engined drivetrain, complete invecs-ii software logic , tiptronic-functionality (the latter subsequently introduced on australian models kj-series).

2004 mitsubishi diamante sedan (usa)


the exterior refreshed 2002 @ time, diamante won new zealand s car of year award. radical restyle followed presentation @ 2003 new york international auto show of new diamante adopting new corporate look. mitsubishi ceased export diamante north america after 2004 due decline in sales , unfavourable exchange rates. u.s. market galant grew in size, , diamante replaced upper-end gts trim of galant.


in canada, diamante sold december 2003 2004 model year only. canadian version based on version, subtle changes such daytime running headlamps, heated exterior mirrors, english/french labelling, , metric gauges/trip computer.


in japan, diamante did not receive extensive 2002 , 2004 restylings of , australian/new zealand models. continued in original narrow-body 1995 form until 2005.


on 15 june 2005, mitsubishi announced halt production on larger sedans within japan december of year, affecting both diamante , galant models. production of magna/verada combo mitsubishi motors australia continued unaffected.



vr-x

introduced in 2002, vr-x sporty variant of australian-made diamante exported north america. continued 2004 restyling.


the 2002 model s exterior based on top-of-the-range australian kj-series verada sedan, whereas mechanicals , fittings derived combination of other australian-made models:



2003 diamante vr-x sedan (usa)



stiffer sports suspension limited edition verada gtv (which, in turn, inherited magna sports/vr-x sedans);
16-inch sports alloy wheels magna sports;
leather trim , electric seats verada xi;
white vr-x -marked instrument fascia magna vr-x (as opposed standard diamante , verada electro instruments);
silver centre console trim , 2-tone leather steering wheel magna vr-x limited edition (losing other diamante s radio remote control);
bodykit featuring front wheel arch extensions , wheelbase skirts magna vr-x, plus unique rear wheel arch extensions , bootlid spoiler.

unique american vr-x 270-watt, eight-speaker sound system , engine 3.5-liter v6 engine developed 210 hp (157 kw) compared standard diamante s 3.5-liter v6 engine s 205 hp (153 kw). vr-x did not, therefore, feature australian high output version fitted magna sports/vr-x based verada gtv, engines produced 163 kw (219 hp) , mated advanced five-speed tiptronic automatic transmission (or five-speed manual in case of said magna models).


the 2004 model continued above mix of features time became more directly based on tl-series magna. specifically, unlike standard diamante models verada on outside, 2004 model based on magna vr-x (for example, rear light cluster identical between these two). diamante vr-x inherited 16-inch alloy wheels australian magna vr-x awd (notably, front-wheel drive magna instead had 17-inch alloy wheels , magna sports no longer wheel donor car because discontinued time). electric seats , leather trim remained verada-derived fittings. steering wheel remained 2-tone leather unit of 2001 tj series magna vr-x limited edition (that became optional accessory available across australian range).
