barker drew inspiration cenobite designs punk fashion, catholicism , visits took s&m clubs in new york , amsterdam. pinhead specifically, barker drew inspiration african fetish sculptures. initially, barker intended pinhead have navel piercing implying character had genital piercings. barker s original hell priest sketches pinhead adapted officially licensed mask composite effects, released in limited quantity public on 24 march 2017. done in celebration of 30th anniversary of hellraiser.


after securing funding in 1986, barker , producer chris figg assembled team design cenobites. among team bob keen , geoff portass @ image animation , jane wildgoose, costume designer requested make series of costumes 4–5 super-butchers while refining scarification designs image animation. in terms of lighting, pinhead designed shadows swirl round head. july 1986, shooting script positively identified single pinheaded cenobite earlier draft leader.
