the original inhabitants of land aborigines of walbanga, murrinjari , bergalia clans. origin of name unclear , in use @ time of first survey in 1828. surveyor robert hoddle described site of future township 640 acres (2.6 km) of forest land @ nellican creek , 1830s timber cutters had cleared site settlement , work had begun on road batemans bay.


the village of nelligen gazetted in 1854 , road inland braidwood completed 2 years later. no bridges existed across clyde @ time, produce , minerals southern new south wales delivered nelligen transport twice-weekly steamer sydney; town serviced illawarra steam navigation company. post office opened in 1858 , protestant church constructed in 1872. existing roman catholic church dates 1895.


by 1892 population had grown 500 construction of several coastal bridges , growth of batemans bay began reduce local trading opportunities. 1934 population had fallen 350, , 2006 had further declined 228. @ 2016 census, had population of 332, although includes surrounding area.


between 1860 , 1915 there gold workings in nelligen district.


a punt service across clyde river begun @ nelligen in 1895 , continued until 1964 when nelligen bridge completed.
