melen , garland began work on cyclops camera interface altair, , spawned several other projects young company. there no convenient way store software altair, other on punched paper tape. remedy problem melen , garland went work on designing programmable read-only memory card called “bytesaver.” bytesaver support resident program allowed computer function when powered up, without having first manually load bootstrap program. bytesaver proved popular peripheral.


there no way see cyclops image stored in altair. work began on graphics interface card connect altair color tv set. graphics interface, called dazzler, introduced in february 1976 issue of popular electronics.


one use altair computer dazzler play games. there no way interface game console or joystick altair. next project design joystick console , interface card supported 8-bit digital channel , 7 analog channels (called d+7a). d+7a more interface joystick, however, , card allowed altair connected world of data acquisition , industrial computing.


cromemco called “specialists in computer peripherals” , had reputation innovative designs , quality construction. were, however, few steps away offering own computer system based on altair computer bus structure, named garland , melen s-100 bus .
