structure , organization

as result of large growth of church, bylaws, outlined how church organised, rewritten more once. outcome of process led changes in leadership organization in november 2007. new bylaws installed lead pastor jamie munson, preaching pastor mark driscoll, , pastors scott thomas , tim beltz executive pastors led objectives of church under authority of board of directors, on executive pastors served directors. change precipitated firing of 2 pastors.



mars hill leaders said in forum postings 1 fired pastor removed, in part, displaying unhealthy distrust in senior leadership. said other removed disregarding accepted elder protocol bylaw deliberation period , verbally attacking lead pastor  — charges fired pastor denied, leaders added.



church reorganization in 2007

former mars hill church elders , members have criticized church harshness in dealing dissent within leadership, citing example incident during church reorganization in 2007 2 elders disapproved of , suggested revisions draft version of rewritten bylaws, viewed consolidating power in hands of mark driscoll , closest aides. both elders disciplined , fired shortly thereafter. church leadership instructed members of congregation shun 2 former elders unrepentant. additionally, members have openly questioned or dissented mars hill leaders have been asked leave church. policy of church discipline discussed during lecture given on april 20, 2009 mark driscoll gospel coalition.


controversy on disciplinary contracts

in 2012 church once again became source of controversy on shunning , disciplinary proceeding when young man under discipline released documents disciplinary contract blogger , author mathew paul turner. documents include discipline contract , email church leaders congregation directing them shun him.


later leadership controversies

in 2014, mark driscoll urged step down 9 of mars hill pastors in private letter. letter quoted respected evangelical pastor paul tripp saying, of mars hill church, without doubt, abusive, coercive ministry culture i’ve ever been involved with.


in 2015, after disbanding of mars hill, executive elder of church stated there has been talk abusive , coercive culture @ mars hill. many people not realize of people calling end type of abuse using abusive tactics. executive elder stated blackmailed staff asked more severance pay. stated former mars hill elders working file formal charges against me also. told former lead pastor approached lead group of people hoped force resignation not pastor mark driscoll .


pastor , theologian john piper referred controversies , subsequent church closure satanic victory.



defeat gospel, defeat mark [driscoll], defeat evangelicalism, reformed theology, complementarianism...it colossal satanic victory.
