carlo emanuele ferdinando maria di savoia born in turin, eldest son of victor amadeus iii, king of sardinia , of wife infanta maria antonia ferdinanda of spain. birth own succession throne of sardinia in 1796, charles emmanuel styled prince of piedmont .


in 1775, charles emmanuel married marie clotilde of france, daughter of louis, dauphin of france , princess marie-josèphe of saxony, , sister of king louis xvi of france. although union arranged political reasons, charles emmanuel , wife became devoted each other. attempts have children, however, unsuccessful.


at death of father (14 october 1796), charles emmanuel succeeded king of sardinia. kingdom included not island of sardinia, significant territories in northwest italy including of piedmont.


at succession throne in 1796, sardinia had been forced conclude disadvantageous treaty of paris (1796) french republic, giving french army free passage through piedmont. on december 6, 1798, french under joubert occupied turin , forced charles emanuel abdicate territories on italian mainland , withdraw island of sardinia, stayed out of reach of french army. following year tried unsuccessfully regain piedmont. , wife lived in rome , in naples guests of wealthy colonna family.


on 7 march 1802 charles emmanuel s wife marie clothilde died. moved death decided abdicate, june 4, 1802 in favour of brother victor emmanuel. charles emmanuel retained personal title of king. lived in rome , in nearby town of frascati.


in frascati frequent guest of henry benedict stuart, cardinal duke of york, last member of royal house of stuart, cousin. charles descended henrietta anne stuart, youngest daughter of charles i, whereas henry benedict stuart descended james ii second son of charles i.


when henry died in 1807, charles emmanuel became senior heir-general of king charles of england , scotland. there no documentary evidence charles emmanuel ever attempted make public claim title of king of england or scotland.


indeed, in 1815 @ age of sixty-four charles emmanuel took simple vows in society of jesus (the jesuits). never ordained priesthood, lived rest of life @ jesuit novitiate in rome.


charles emmanuel died @ palazzo colonna in rome on 6 october 1819. buried in church of sant andrea al quirinale.
