stadelhofen station opened in 1894, @ same time lake zürich right bank railway (rechtsufrige zürichseebahn) zürich hauptbahnhof rapperswil station. until 1990, station intermediate stop on single track line, departed hauptbahnhof in westerly direction, before performing clockwise 270 degrees turn via viaduct on river limmat , passing through letten station , letten tunnel stadelhofen. rail distance between hauptbahnhof , stadelhofen 5 kilometres (3.1 mi), despite fact 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) apart in straight line.


in 1990 there major changes railway geography of part of zürich. north of stadelhofen, letten tunnel closed , replaced twin-track hirschengraben tunnel, took direct route under river limmat hauptbahnhof, serving new through low level platforms there. @ same time junction formed south of stadelhofen, allowing trains leaving zurich take either original right bank line tiefenbrunnen station , onwards rapperswil, or travel via newly built zürichberg tunnel stettbach station , points east , north of zurich.


stadelhofen therefore became part of through west-east backbone of zürich s-bahn, , heavily rebuilt current form additional platform , enhanced station infrastructure.
