the japanese: nissan violet, smaller version of datsun bluebird 610, sold outside japan under nissan s datsun brand datsun 140j/160j — except in united states marketed datsun 710. model built two-door saloon, two-door coupé, four-door fastback, (and later regular four-door saloon), estate, , van. introducing violet allowed nissan moderately increase dimensions of existing datsun bluebird.


the sporty sss model has rear independent suspension, others have leaf sprung rear. aside different name, north american market 710 received large separate bumpers rather curved, fitted pieces used in other markets comply united states bumper legislation in 1973. export market cars fitted tiny chrome cover plates hide holes left on top of front fenders japanese market rear view mirrors. powerful version offered in japan fuel injected 1600 sss-e 110 ps (81 kw) jis @ 6200 rpm. in export markets twin-carb 160j sss claimed 95 ps (70 kw) din, 5 more regular 160j. in japan, 1800 cc engine arrived in october 1975 , available running on lpg, taxi use.

for mexican domestic car market, 710-series violet produced 1973 1978 @ nissan s civac assembly plant, near cuernavaca, mexico. @ time, nissan mexico offered unique passenger-vehicles lineup, datsun bluebird range (the 510-series , 410, previously), integrated 4-door saloon , wagon versions of bluebird, respectively commercialized datsun sedan , datsun guayín (guayín moniker in mexican spanish station wagon ). in 1974, going on same business strategy, 710-series violet introduced mexican car market badged new datsun 160j, replacement single-offered bluebird lineup.


the mexican 710 violet range integrated 4-door saloon alongside wagon, lacking sporty 2-door/coupe bodies offered in other countries. fastback-styled 710 4-door saloon design marketed 1974 1977, being replaced in 1978 notchback-styled 711 violet (which intended improve fastback s bad rear visibility complained customers). mexican 710 violets featured 1.6-liter carbureted engine (160j), coupled 4-speed manual gearbox, , optional 3-speed automatic gearbox starting in 1978.

due short notice , short timeframe of licence requirement relaxation, cars imported differed in specification shipment shipment - had japanese market amber front park lights, front guard-mounted exterior rear view mirrors , violet badges; later units had clear lenses , 140j/160j badging.


several hundred 140j sedans entered new zealand through port of timaru south island market , presold before arrived. keenly sought-after , hard secure better specified standard (tinted glass, pushbutton radio, etc.) nz-assembled ckd kit imported models, consisted of datsun 1200 sedan , wagon, , 180b (bluebird) , 260c (cedric) sedans.


almost-new 140js resold after first registration hundreds of dollars more retail prices, such model line s initial popularity. japanese assembly quality of 140j better nz-built datsuns of time assembled outside assembly contractors - nissan did not open own temporary plant in mt roskill, auckland, until mid-1970s , dedicated, purpose-built factory in wiri in 1978.



south africa

in south africa, 1976 711 facelift arrived in october 1976 , continued in production while longer in japan. sold datsun 160u or 180u, depending on engine fitment. deluxe , sss sedans sss hardtop available. batch of 100 sss models (some of bluebirds) special mexican upholstery built in 1978.
