invercauld house, 2 miles north-east of braemar in aberdeenshire solid castellated mansion massive tower, battlements , turrets. built old tower house built fabric. held clan stewart passed farquharsons when donald farquharson married heiress of invercauld. son findlay mor royal standard bearer @ battle of pinkie cleugh in 1547 , killed there. here earl of mar, leader of jacobite rising of 1715 called out jacobites , farquharsons of invercauld still flourish.
inverey castle, 4 miles west of braemar, seat of john farquharson of inverey, black colonel, murdered john gordon of brackley in 1666 recorded in old ballad baron o brackley. john farquharson of inverey defeated force attacking braemar castle, torched. inverey demolished in 1689 following battle of killiecrankie.
kindrochit castle ruins of 11th century castle built king malcolm canmore. remains located in braemar across local butchery shop.
braemar castle, north-east of braemar seventeenth century l-plan tower house crowing turrets. defended star shaped artillery defences date next century. castle built earl of mar in 1628 because did not support james vii of scotland in 1689, castle seized , torched john farquharson of inverey, black colonel. when jacobite rising of 1715 fizzled out castle passed farquharsons of invercauld.
monaltrie house held farquharsons fought james graham, 1st marquess of montrose in 1640s , charles ii @ battle of worcester in 1651. francis farquharson of monaltrie led farquharsons @ battle of culloden , although survived imprisoned , condemned death, lucky enough have execution reduced exile. monaltrie house burned after battle of culloden.
gilmilnscroft, 4 miles south-east of mauchline in ayrshire, t-plan house held farquhars , dates seventeenth century. may incorporate tower house , lands held farquhars fourteenth twentieth century. building restored in 1968 , still occupied.
mounie castle, 3 miles north-west of oldmeldrum, aberdeenshire altered seventeenth century t-plan house round stair tower passed clan seton farquhars in 1634 , clan hay in 1701.
tolquhon castle, 4 miles east of oldmeldrum, courtyard castle range of buildings , drum towered gatehouse. original castle built prestons of craigmillar passed clan forbes in 1420 built present castle. sold farquhars in 1716.
