john oxley donated lady hopetoun , port jackson marine steam museum (now sydney heritage fleet) in 1970. saw little repair work until 1997, when restoration on ship, barque james craig, @ stage taken off floating dock. until then, john oxley s hull had gradually deteriorated , badly in need of repairs when put on floating dock in place of james craig.
since 2002 john oxley has been under continuous restoration @ heritage dockyard of sydney heritage fleet, rozelle bay, sydney. during eighty years on water, ship had incurred substantial corrosion hull, decks , superstructure. majority of plates of ship s riveted hull have required complete replication using same hot riveted method when ship built.
the restoration work entails repair , reconditioning of machinery, masts , rigging, timberwork, internal fitout , making ship seaworthy can put survey , make coastal voyages.
