in norwegian parliamentary elections, socialist left party holds position seventh-largest party in norway, behind labour party, conservatives, progress party, christian democrats, centre party, , liberals. popularity declined levels achieved socialist electoral league. seat count rose peak after 2001 parliamentary election; election marked socialist left s largest voter count, 12.5% of national vote.


when socialist electoral league founded in 1970s, party won voters labour party, ruled majority government. speculation said labour party had lost 100,000 votes electoral league. socialist left party gained 16 seats in parliament. after unification process finished, party s voter base collapsed , earned 4.2% of national vote in 1977 parliamentary election, , earned 2 seats in parliament. after election, party won new voters, , in 1989 parliamentary election, gathered 10.1% of national vote. after election, party lost voters again, , after 1997 election, party mustered 9 representatives in parliament.


after having many described bad election in 2001, norwegian labour party lost many of voters socialist left, socialist left increasing 6% 12.5% of national vote, again becoming fourth largest party in country. however, growth did not last long. in 2005 election, party gathered 8.8% of vote; further decreased in 2009 election, when party gathered 6.2% of vote; , again in 2013 election, when party gathered 4.1%, 1,600 votes away falling under election threshold.



local elections

the 1975 county , municipality election met sharp decrease in voters, party earning disappointing voter turnout of 5.5% in municipal election , 5.7% in county election. in opinion poll done before election day in 1975, estimated half of voters voted socialist electoral league not vote party again. decrease in voters due labour party s election surge during 1973 parliamentary election. party further decreased in popular support 1979 local election, earning 4.1% in municipal , 4.4% in county respectively.


by 1983 local election party increased 1% in municipal , 0.9% in county election. according opinion poll done in september, labour party lose 4 of oslo representatives in parliament progress party, conservative party, , socialist left. if 1983 local election had been parliamentary election, socialist left have received 8 seats in parliament. party earned 5.5% , 5.7% in county , municipal elections in 1987 respectively. party s strongest county nordland, party gained 21.9% of popular vote.


the 1991 election marked large increase in voters party, earning 11.6 in municipalities , 12.2% in counties, making party third-largest party in norway. socialist left, along centre party, named election s big winners norwegian press. in following election, party gathered 5.9% in municipalities , 6.1% in counties. before election in 1991, polls showed increase in popular support socialist left in oslo. reason increase party again able win votes labour party. party gained 7.8% of votes in municipalities , 8.5% in counties.


by 2003, party s voter based had increased dramatically on 1999 local elections. party had many described record election , winning of voters labour party. 2007 elections went badly party; voter base reduced half local elections of 2003. in 2011 local elections, party fared worse, getting above 4% of votes on nationwide basis. after this, leader kristin halvorsen announced resignation on election night.
